6-Week Sewing 101 Curriculum
Objective: Teach foundational sewing skills, introduce students to essential tools and techniques, and complete two beginner-friendly projects.
Week 1: Introduction to Sewing
• Overview of Sewing Tools & Materials
• Sewing machine parts & functions
• Needles, thread, fabric types, measuring tools, cutting tools
• Basic Stitches & Seams
• Straight stitch, backstitch, zigzag stitch
• Practice Exercise: Sewing straight lines and corners on scrap fabric
Week 2: Understanding Patterns & Fabric Handling
• Reading and Cutting a Pattern
• Understanding pattern symbols, grainlines, and fabric layouts
• Fabric Preparation
• Pre-washing, pressing, and pinning techniques
• Seam Finishes
• Pinking shears, zigzag finish, French seams
• Mini Practice: Cutting and sewing fabric swatches
Week 3: Project 1 – Reversible Tote Bag
• Skills Applied:
• Cutting and sewing fabric
• Creating handles and topstitching
• Reinforced seams for durability
• Project Work:
• Begin cutting fabric and assembling bag panels
Week 4: Completing the Tote Bag + Zippers & Buttonholes
• Finish Tote Bag Construction
• Sewing handles, lining, and final stitching
• Introduction to Closures
• Sewing a zipper
• Creating a buttonhole (automatic/manual)
• Practice Exercise: Sewing a zipper and buttonhole on scrap fabric
Week 5: Project 2 – Pajama Shorts or Skirt
• Skills Applied:
• Working with elastic or drawstring
• Sewing curves and hemming
• Project Work:
• Cutting fabric and assembling garment pieces
Week 6: Completing the Garment + Final Review
• Finishing touches on pajama shorts/skirt
• Hemming, inserting elastic/drawstring
• Pressing and final adjustments
• Final Class:
• Review of techniques learned
• Q&A and troubleshooting
• Student showcase of completed projects
